This blog is dedicated to plants from desert regions around the world as well as plants that have adapted to withstand arid conditions, but do not occur in real deserts. Many of the plants are found in arid semi-desert regions. There will be a greater emphasis on succulent plants, but others will also be included. This blog deals with desert plants of the Americas, Africa, Arabia and others. We are situated in South Africa and South African plants are likely to feature more dominantly. The pictures taken are from our private botanical desert garden at Leopoort near Oudtshoorn, from plants in nature, as well as other collections.

Copiapoa hypogaea


Copiapoa hypogaea is small globular cactus reaching a diameter of about 6.5 cm. The plants are native to Chile (Antofagasta).

The yellow flowers occur in summer, arising from the woolly crown of the plants.

Copiapoa hypogaea should be watered with care and requires a well drained compost. The recommended minimum temperature is 10 deg Celsius.

Copiapoa calderana subsp.calderana


Copiapoa calderana subsp.calderana is a cactus native to Chile (Coastal areas of Atacama). In habitat the plants reach a height of approximately 30 cm.

The plants grow under desert conditions with extremely low rainfall. Copiapoa calderana subsp.calderana survives in habitat mainly on the condensation of fog.

The flowers are yellow.

Grow in good light but protect from full sun.

The plants prefer a well drained soil which should be watered only when dry.

Protect from frost.
