Echinocactus palmeri

Echinocactus palmeri ( Echinocactus platyacanthus var. palmeri ) is an attactive large growing 'Barrel Cactus' that naturally occurs in the state Zacatecas, Mexico.

The plants are globular at first and become elongated with age. Old plants can attain a diameter of about 50 cm and a height of some 2 meters. The plants have stout yellowish-brown spines.

The diurnal flowers are yellow, laced on the edges and are produced in summer.

Echinocactus palmeri likes a normal well drained cactus compost and a sunny position. Older plants can endure mild frost (-3) in winter quite well. Watering should be done mainly in summer.
